Medi-Laxx combines two active ingredients to alleviate constipation via distinct cellular mechanisms. Docusate Sodium acts as a stool softener. It is an anionic surfactant that reduces the surface tension of water and fats within the stool. This allows water and lipids to penetrate the hard, dry mass, effectively softening it from the inside out. Simultaneously, Sennosides (derived from Senna) function as stimulant laxatives. At the cellular level, they are metabolized by colonic bacteria into active anthrones. These compounds irritate the colonic mucosa, stimulating the myenteric plexus. This triggers rhythmic smooth muscle contractions (peristalsis) and actively inhibits fluid and electrolyte reabsorption in the large intestine, increasing stool bulk and promoting evacuation.
